ECC88 6DJ8 “BUGLE BOY” made by AMPEREX Februari 1960
This is a pair early ECC88 Amperex Bugle Boy tubes made in Holland (Heerlen plant). A legendary member of the ECC88/6DJ8 family. Tubes have a grey shield and a large halo-getter. Tubes are manufactured in Februari & Januari 1960. These tubes are pulls from rarely used lab equipment (some dust remains). Very healthy tubes with matching systems; see test results. The pair is thoroughly tested and has excellent test values that match the factory specifications of a new tube very well and both tubes have balanced systems. See test results below.
THE PRODUCTION YEARS 1958 TILL 1963 ARE WIDELY CONSIDERED THE BEST!
Sonics
The Bugle Boy version of Amperex is known as a very fine ECC88 tube; with a rewarding sound image. This is how the experts and audiophiles describe the sound signature of the Amperex Bugle Boy ECC88 tubes:
- warm/full-bodied without being “dry or veiled”,
- lush, airy, smooth and somewhat romantic,
- a sweet top end; pleasantly high without sharpness,
- musical and compelling, more enjoyable than clinically analytical,
- smooth, fluid and non-aggressive,
- dynamic and lively,
- detailed, but not hyper-detailed.
Summarising: the overall tonality of Bugle Boy ECC88 tubes is “Warm, rich, lush and highly musical, with a sweet and smooth top end, full-bodied mids and a lively, engaging presentation.”
I refer to the many threads on the web for more information.
Note: if your system is too “warm sounding’, this tube is not a first choice. Telefunken made ECC88 tubes are to be considered in that situation.
Test method & results
The tubes have been tested carefully with the official Telefunken test set-up and our sophisticated test equipment. Please read our testmethod for the ECC88 tube family. The measurement data below show that these tubes are matched to each other and are internally balanced. And meet the factory specifications of a new/NOS tube.
